Right to vote and to be elected in local elections for migrants

Avatar: Milutin Palibrk Milutin Palibrk

Granting voting rights in local elections to migrants can have enormous symbolic importance because it sends the message of equal treatment. It would help migrants and refugees to integrate better in the host countries as well as giving them dignity. As tax payers migrants and refugees should be able to decide on services provision on local level as any other Greek or EU national does.

In Denmark, Sweden and Finland, voting in local elections is allowed after three years of permanent residency.
